The Story So-So Far (Daily Planet email #1126)
(title card in Clarendon over duotone people inquisitive togetherness)
(music: DeWolfe - “Baby Jane” by Soft Slipper)

VO: Nobody knows why we’re here.
(ding)
Of course, everybody knows why we’re in this room – for the filmstrip – but nobody really knows why we’re here.
(ding)
We can decorate it with candy and pigtails, with aluminum siding and jelly shoes, cheese and laser light shows. Glitter glue.
(ding)
But none of that is why we’re here. So then, why? If I told you, would you believe me? No, you wouldn’t. How will we know?
(ding)
We will not know.
(ding)
But sometimes, in those bright and brilliant moments, those wintry days when the veil grows thin and we feel something, something heartfelt and radiant, or those afternoons in the fields covered in sun and possibility and with the light of a friend, we get a sense, a gentle breeze, of the why.
(ding)
Something between feeling and belief. Something shaken and unshakable. A primary pentimento.
(ding)
So you’ve been asking the right questions! Still don’t have an answer. For heaven’s sake.
(ding)
Let’s say though, through no fault of your own, you wind up in heaven. You start taking pictures, a crap-ton of pictures, like someone who’s never been to a city before – “This is amazing!” “Look at all those lights!” “I’ve never seen anything like it!!” But what are you gonna do next? Are you going to look at those pictures? Because, you know, the view will be the same tomorrow, and the day after, for a literal eternity, literally amazing.
(ding)
Wouldn’t you want to, kind of, mess it up a little? To give it some interest? Besmirch it respectfully? To feel hungry again, something like desire, that unsated searching? To make the finding worthwhile?
(ding)
None of that is why we’re here. We drew the shape to fit the condition.
(ding)
Logic theory says: from a false premise, any implication is true.
(ding)
But it’s just a theory. But don’t get all hassled, man – it’s just a theory.
(ding)
As you were.
